Studio Session Live

Production suspended until further notice

To all the volunteers who made Studio Session Live possible:  Thank you. I hope that you are aware of how important a part you played in making SSL, and how it became well  recognized by the artists who performed for us, and even by many who did not yet perform.

To the talented Guest Artists who graced our stage, and whose music is always running through my head:  It has been my pleasure to meet, to hear, and to work with you. Thank you. Without your talent, SSL would have been nothing. I hope that you will be hearing from me in the near future to discuss future programs. Until then, good luck.

We could schedule 50 more shows easily. The problem for SSL is being able to get crew together to make the shows. In the last year, that has become more difficult as HCAM expanded production while the volunteer pool remained constant.

Rather than continue trying to solve problems that I have no control over, I am suspending production. I will always be grateful to you for all the time and effort that you contributed to help make SSL the success that it has been, and is. Studio Session Live will restart but I do not know now where or when. When it does, I will let you know.

As a friend said, “it is about the good music, and the good friends.” Thank you all.

About Producing Studio Session Live

When Studio Session Live was first an idea, one of the first goals was to achieve audio and video quality that exceeded the average cable access quality. The second goal was to make sure that the production was as transparent as possible so that nothing we did came between the audience and the guest artist.

Studio Session Live is a commitment between the guest artist and the producer. In return for the show that the guest artist creates, it is our job to produce the show, and to make sure that nothing comes between the audience and the performer. Our show should be transparent. The viewer should enjoy the performance, not see the medium.

As you can imagine, producing a television show like Studio Session Live takes a lot of resources. When I walk into the studio and start setting lighting for the show, I look at about $150,000 worth of very expensive and technical equipment.

Before the guest artists walks into the studio, we have already spent about two man hours on the show. The volunteer crew will include three cameramen, a director, and a sound engineer. By the time the show is recorded. we have spent another 10 man-hours. Post production and editing will take another four man-hours. That adds up to about 16 man-hours per show, all donated by volunteers.
